Injury Recovery Program
For dancers, injuries can be an extremely frightening and unfortunately many young dancers experience some kind of serious injury during their training. While proper technique and cross-training are extremely important in injury prevention, once an injury does happen, it is imperative to have a clear plan for recovery in place. Dancers facing a serious injury often are hesitant to take time off because they are afraid of losing technique and falling behind their peers. Injuries can be extremely disheartening as dancers are not able to participate in something that they love so much! Even though it can be frightening and discouraging, taking more time at the beginning of an injury to recover and to properly rehabilitate is the absolute best plan of action and will actually reduce the total recovery time. Proper rest and rehabilitation also enable a dancer to return to what they love even stronger than when they left!
In a response to helping several of her dancers recover from injuries, Lauren Ader-Cumpston has developed a program to help dancers to walk through injuries with resilience and success. Working with local sports physicians and physical therapists is extremely important in successfully recovering from an injury, and the coaching and program provided at BellÈclat will help the dancers bridge the gap between therapy and returning to class safely. Coaching a dancer through an injury will look different for each individual depending on the severity and type of injury, but through our Injury Recovery Program BellÈclat will help to provide helpful resources and connections to the best local physicians and physical therapists, help the dancer to develop a personalized rehabilitation plan, and coach the dancer through the difficult mental and emotional challenges that can come along with facing an injury. Our Recovery Goal: Come Back Stronger!
Many dancers who have been through the process of recovering from an injury will say that their injury is one of the best things that happened to their dance careers. This may sound so strange! But if the dancer walks through the rehabilitation process in the right way, they will absolutely be able to return to dancing stronger than when they left. Injuries most often occur from weakness in technique or strength. The rest and rehabilitation process allows the dancer time and space to slow down, focus on the areas of their technique that are lacking, and to hone in on the specific muscle coordination needed to properly execute classical dance. In knowing that they can return stronger, a dancer can face their recovery process with hope and resilience - helping them to return to dancing radiant, exquisite and thriving!
Taking Time to Rest.
Taking time to rest is extremely important in the process of injury recovery and you should always follow the advice of your doctor or PT. In some cases, dancers may need to take a period of time for complete rest and most dancers will be required to restrict their activity in some way. During this time of restricted activity, dancers can continue to maintain and even increase strength in the muscles that are unaffected by the injury.
Working with your Doctor and PT.
While developing a recovery plan, it is extremely important to be working with your doctor and PT. The rehabilitation that BellÈclat provides is not a replacement for the very important services that medical professionals provide in the injury recovery process. Rather, BellÈclat’s program will help the dancer bridge the gap between PT and returning to dance full time. It is a coaching program that is designed to provide mentorship to dancers walking through the injury recovery process, which can be extremely difficult to navigate on your own.
Developing a Daily Plan.
Developing a daily schedule and plan for a dancer recovering from an injury is extremely important. BellÈclat will help dancers to assess areas of weakness and holes in their technique and establish an individualized daily plan that they can work on at home or in the studio. A dancer’s plan may include specific strengthening/floor barre exercises and incorporate programs like Progressing Ballet Technique but will be customized to fit the need of the individual dancer. As the dancer recovers, the plan will evolve and gradually build the dancer back to dancing at 100% of their capacity while actually improving strength, mobility and technique!
Mental and Emotional Health.
Sometimes the most difficult aspect of an injury is wading through the intense emotional and mental strain that can accompany it. Dancers may feel afraid of missing out on opportunities, afraid of what the injury might mean for their careers, saddened by not being able to do what they love, and even angry about the situation. Addressing and helping dancers to deal with these thoughts and emotions is just as important as the physical recovery. BellÈclat’s mentorship program will help dancers to work through difficult emotions and mental roadblocks so that they can have a healthy and effective recovery!
